Grade 4-6-Each of these titles focuses on one Native group. Historical information is given in the first section, utilizing a variety of illustrations, photographs, and occasional maps. Then, a lengthy illustrated story describes daily events from the perspective of one or more individuals. Cheyenne details the life of a hunter and his son in the late 1800s, their interactions with white settlers, and the enjoyment of a game. Pueblo also includes background information, but follows a modern fictional elder through his day at Taos Pueblo. In both books, some of the illustrations of individuals, especially those in historical settings, exhibit a lack of sensitivity, with few individual characteristics or expressions shown. The technical drawings of objects are more accurate and useful. Both titles were originally published in Italy. Teachers will find these titles helpful, and students will be able to use them for reports.
